Annunciation

On March 25, the Orthodox Church celebrates the announcement of the Savior’s birth. It was Archangel Gabriel who told Virgin Mary the good news.
Bulgarians call this holiday also Blagoveshtenie, Blagovets and half Easter. Popular belief has it that on this day swallows fly back to bring the good news that winter is gone and summer has come.
Based on folk etymology of the name of the feast (Blagovets - good, sweet), it is believed that each wound heals very quickly on this day. Thus, it is precisely on Blagovets that girls have their ears pierced and breeders brand their livestock.
