St. Trifon’s Day

In the Bulgarian folk calendar the beginning of February is associated with the day of Trifon Zarezan. St. Trifon is the patron of winegrowers, tavern-keepers and gardeners. The first of February, and according to old traditions - February 14, is associated with the pruning of grapevines and fruit trees, with the beginning of the spring-summer period and of agricultural labor. Many of the preserved customs and rituals are identical to the mystical games played in honor of Dionysus - the god of fertility, joy and wine. On St. Trifon’s day the housewives got up early, kneaded fresh bread and prepared roasted chicken stuffed with rice. Traditionally, they also prepared tutmanik (cheese bread), grilled sujuk and fried eggs, poured wine into а wine vessel and put everything in a new colorful bag. With the full bag men set off to the vineyards to prune the vines in the hope that they would produce more wine. The winegrowers cut several twigs from their vines and poured some wine on the cut places. After that, they made garlands from the twigs and put them on their hats.

THE ICON – A SYMBOL AND AN IMAGE IN MODERN BULGARIAN ART

5 December 2017 – 4 February 2018
OPENING: 5 December, Tuesday, 6 p.m.
The exhibition is an attempt at seeking answers about how artists perceive and interpret the icon in secular artworks, what is the icon’s symbolic value, and how mediaeval and Revival-period figurativeness and aesthetics influence the artistic language of modern authors. The chronological framework is delineated by the Liberation of Bulgaria in 1878 and the year 1989, thus covering two broader major periods – before and after World War II.
The exhibition presents over 100 works grouped into several thematic sections. The earliest artworks include creations of the foreign-born artists Joseph Oberbauer, Josef Pitter, and Ivan Mrkvička who arrived in Bulgaria soon after the Liberation. A new and significant page in the history of Bulgarian fine arts was opened up in the 1920s. Mediaeval art clearly exerted its impact on the artistic output of several 1920s authors. Icons, church murals and the adornment of manuscript books with their specific plastic language were rendered into significant sources of ideas. The exhibition comprises works by Ivan Milev, Ivan Penkov, Tsanko Lavrenov, Boris Denev, etc., which are emblematic of the 1920s arts and culture. Another collection of artworks traces the image of the icon that complements the “truthfulness” of historical compositions or serves as an intermediary to a new spiritual dimension. The list of emblematic Bulgarian artists whose works are exhibited includes Zlatyu Boyadzhiev, Iliya Beshkov, Dechko Uzunov, Atanas Patsev, Dimitar Kirov, Rumen Skorchev, Lika Yanko, Ivan Vukadinov, etc.

Sirni Zagovezni (Shrove Sunday)

Sirni Zagovezni (Shrove Sunday) or Forgiveness Sunday is a day for forgiveness. It always takes place seven weeks before Easter – on the last preparatory Sunday before the start of the Great Lent. On this day, the Church urges believers to purify their souls and fill their hearts with peace and love in order to meet the Resurrected Christ. As only dairy and egg dishes from the non-lenten food are put on the table the day is called Sirni Zagovezni. Traditionally, after dinner people forgive one another for past mistakes so that they can start the Great Lent with clean conscience.

The tradition for people to disguise themselves on Shrove Sunday dates back to the Middle Ages and even long before. The masks were supposed to chase away the evil spirits that roam the earth. This custom is followed only in some parts of Bulgaria. The festival symbolizes the victory of light over darkness - that is, the coming of spring and the end of winter. Surva International Festival of the Masquerade Games, which has the same function, is part of UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

BULGARIA MARKS 145 YEARS SINCE THE HANGING OF THE BULGARIAN APOSTLE OF FREEDOM VASIL LEVSKI

Vasil Ivanov Kunchev (1837 - 1873 d) is the most beloved Bulgarian hero who dedicated his life to the liberation of his homeland. On February 19, 2018 the entire Bulgarian nation will honor the memory of the Apostle of Freedom and the 145th anniversary of his death. Traditionally, the ceremony takes place at 18.00 o’clock in Sofia, in front of the monument of Vasil Levski which is built on the site of his hanging.

Before this, at 17.00 o’clock, a memorial service is held in St. Sophia Church. Levski passed by this temple on the way to the gallows. It accommodates thousands of Bulgarians - both young and old, who want to bow down before his feat. The procession is impressive and reaches the monument of the Apostle. Despite the cold weather, this monument is embraced by people’s love as well as by thousands of flowers and dozens of wreaths.

Saint Theodore's Day, Horse Easter

On February 24, 2018 – the first Saturday of the Great Lent, as well as on February 17, the Church commemorates St. Theodore Tyron. In the Orthodox calendar there are 6 canonized saints that bear the name Theodore which means God's gift. However, people seldom differentiate between the different saints. A unique painting from 1259 in the Boyana Church portrays three saints bearing this name - St. Theodore Tyron and St. Theodore Stratelates, who are venerated as Warrior Saints, as well as St. Theodore the Studite. Saint Theodore's Day is one of the first spring feasts. Horse races are conducted on this day and thus this custom is called Horse Easter. The men prepare the horses – they comb them and decorate them with beads, tassels, and colored threads. You can watch the traditional horse races in Dragalevtsi quarter, Benkovski quarter, Fakulteta quarter and at National Hippodrome Bankya. There are horse races around the whole country. Only lent food is consumed on this day. Boiled corn is also given away to people.
