Hundreds of dancers, musicians and singers are united by a magical international force – their love towards folklore. The aim of the festival is to promote the dance art of various Bulgarian regions and to introduce the folklore of the visiting countries.

SOCIETY OF SOUTH BULGARIAN ARTISTS – EXHIBITION

The Society of South Bulgarian Artists was founded in 1912 and it organized its first exhibition 105 years
ago uniting artists from the southern parts of the country. Some of the brightest Bulgarian artists have been members over the years. The exhibition presents a lot of unknown works as well as works of many forgotten or unnamed artists in the history of Bulgarian art. The project is realized in partnership with the team of City Art Gallery – Plovdiv and with the cooperation of the National Art Gallery, the National Academy of Arts, the art galleries in Burgas, Kazanlak, Kyustendil, Pazardzhik, Ruse, Silistra, Sliven, Stara Zagora, Yambol, Archives State Agency and Ivan Vazov National Library – Plovdiv.

On July 18, 2019 Bulgaria will celebrate the 182nd anniversary of the birth of Vasil Levski - the greatest Bulgarian hero and the Apostle of Freedom. He established a plan for a pure and sacred republic where democracy and the people are above everything, and all people are brothers and sisters regardless of their faith and nationality.

180 degrees is not only a festival but also a platform / laboratory for contemporary music, dance, theater, design and architecture. 180 degrees is an experiment that provokes art, people, artists and space. The mission of 180 degrees’ team is to provide young artists with the opportunity to develop their innovative and creative ideas and to present their art to more people. Since 2014, these events have diversified the cultural program of the capital and have provided more varied options during the summer season. The idea of the festival is an exchange of knowledge and creative techniques between foreign and Bulgarian professionals in the field of contemporary art!

July 20 - Feast of St Elijah the Prophet (Ilinden)

The biggest feast in July is Ilinden - dedicated to the great Old Testament prophet Elijah.
The Bulgarians worship the prophet Elijah as the master of the celestial elements – the hail, the thunder, and the lightning. It is believed that when he rides his horses in the sky, he causes thunder and fire. If people do not worship him and if they do not prepare a sacrifice, the saint can lock the celestial humidity and not let rain on earth for three years. Because of this, on this day, some big male animal is usually slaughtered - a bull, an ox, or a ram. The priest performs a ceremony and sanctifies the meal. He sprinkles holy water so that there are no periods of drought during the summer. Traditionally, people slaughter the oldest rooster.
