Postwar SOFIA

Postwar architecture has to a large extent shaped contemporary Europe. Sofia makes no exception. The second half of the 20th century was a period of rapid construction that changed the city beyond recognition.

This map does not collect the symbols of this era, but rather places where Bulgarian postwar architecture unexpectedly engages with past periods, thus creating surprising perspectives while telling stories of architectural and technological experiments, urban development, and even moments of resistance to the status quo.

POSTWAR SOFIA is an initiative of Sofia Tourism Administration - Visit Sofia in partnership with New Architectural Heritage Foundation.

New Architectural Heritage is a non-governmental organisation working on the identification, protection, promotion and development of significant examples of Bulgarian postwar and contemporary architecture.
