Sofia received the prize "Bulgarian Destination of the Year" at the Grand Hotel Awards ceremony for Bulgarian Tourism Awards. The recognition is not accidental - it is well-deserved thanks to the consistent work in developing the destination as an attractive year-round opportunity for cultural, historical, congress, festival, and spa tourism. Already in the period 2009 - 2017, Sofia was among the European cities with the highest growth of foreign tourists - with an average annual growth of 9%. The trend continues today - in the period January - November 2019 3.45% more tourists stayed overnight compared to the same period in 2018. Most foreign tourists come from Germany, Israel, Greece, Italy, Great Britain (traditional markets for Sofia). The number of tourists from distant markets – the USA, Canada, Australia, China - is also increasing. Among the main reasons for the increase in the number of tourists are the investments of Sofia Municipality in the urban environment, the display of cultural and historical heritage, the urban mobility and cultural events. Efforts are also directed towards one of the key priorities of the destination - the healing mineral waters and the renovation of iconic buildings related to their use - the Baths in Bankya, which are being restored and will be turned into a center for balneo and spa tourism. New 4- and 5-star hotels are about to open, four tourist information centers welcome Sofia’s guests, and a Bulgarian Convention Bureau has been set up to stimulate the development of congress and event tourism.
Sofia is gradually offering more and more attractions – come and see for yourself! Welcome to Sofia!
