On October 15, 2017 the 34th edition of Sofia Marathon - Wizz Air Sofia Marathon 2017, started in front of Vasil Levski National Stadium. The event took place under the patronage of Sofia Municipality and gathered a record 4410 participants, including 744 foreigners from over 40 countries. The greatest athletic competition in Bulgaria attracted a lot of participants as well as many supporters along the course which passed through several of the most beautiful and green boulevards in the capital. Once again the marathon was part of the initiative Sofia – European Capital of Sport. The competition was classified as a state championship and as a finale of the Bulgarian athletic cycle under the motto "Running – a way of life". This is part of the city’s policy to stimulate sport and active lifestyle - the numerous sports playgrounds and events in the city are accessible to all citizens and guests. The mayor of Sofia Ms. Yordanka Fandakova handed a laurel wreath to Barmao Kiprono from Kenya - the winner of Sofia Marathon in the official distance of 42.195 km. Among women, the victory went to Ruth Matebo. The wreath was handed by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Krasen Kralev. There were also other prizes, quizzes and entertaining activities to ensure the good mood of all participants and onlookers.
